  • DICK VITALES PICKS!! Revised preseason pick:
    Experienced 'Zona No. 1

    April 24
With several recent defections from the college ranks to the NBA draft, it's time to revise my preseason 2002-03 Dazzling Dozen.

My new choice for No. 1 is Arizona. Coach Lute Olson is happy to have maestro man Jason Gardner coming back for his senior season. Kansas falls a notch after forward Drew Gooden opted for the pros, but coach Roy Williams and company still have a solid contender. Here's a look at my new preseason Dazzling Dozen:

    1. Arizona
The Wildcats have veterans galore, and that experience will be a plus. Arizona has inside/outside talent and the complete package. Luke Walton and Gardner provide a dynamite 1-2 punch. Rick Anderson is also slated to return. Star recruit Hassan Adams should have an immediate impact.

    2. Kansas
The Jayhawks lose Gooden's inside power and Jeff Boschee's jump shot, but big man Nick Collison and point guard Kirk Hinrich are back. Williams still has a team that can win it all. Aaron Miles, Wayne Simien and Keith Langford will be even better as super sophs.

    3. Duke
It's bye-bye for Jason Williams and Carlos Boozer, but don't write off the Dukies yet. It's hello to Shavlik Randolph and a host of diaper dandies. Remember, the return of Mike Dunleavy, Chris Duhon, Dahntay Jones and Daniel Ewing gives Duke a wealth of winning experience.

    4. Kentucky
The Wildcats will bounce back with the potential return of Jason Parker to provide low-post power. Kentucky was really missing that last season. Having guard Keith Bogans back for a final season is a definite plus. Look for him to have a big senior campaign.

    5. Pittsburgh
Coach Ben Howland is smiling, as his Panthers return all five starters. With Brandin Knight at the controls, it should be a big year for
  • Our own center Richard Diforio is considering an offer from the Portland Trailblazers instead of playing his senior year here at UCIS.

Meet the Team
Head coach Dave VanValkenburg will start his 12th year as head coach this coming season. Van Valkenburg is a 1976 graduate of UCIS, where he was a 4-year letterman. After his illustrious basketball career as a Woodchuck, Van Valkenburg coached at a private high school in Virginia for 5 years and then returned to UCIS as an assistant defensive coach. Returning Players: Eric Stone, number 12, shooting guard, 6'10", 195, junior. T Greenwood, number 25, forward, 6', 165, sophmore. Hans Magelby, number 17, point guard, 7'2", 220, senior Dave Stringham, number 3, small forward, 5' 11", 170, junior Jason Mitchell, number 44, big forward, 7', 200, senior
